Wallcliffe Wines
One-man band.
Luke Sleegers is the man behind Wallcliffe Wines, farming organically and making small-batch wines by hand from his shed in the vineyard.
Organic from the ground up.
The 10-hectare vineyard was planted in 2001 and comprises Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Organically farmed since 2019, the site’s sandy loam, ironstone gravel and clay soils create distinct expressions between blocks. Cows and sheep graze beneath the vines through winter, while cover crops are allowed to dry and form a protective mulch that retains moisture, moderates soil temperature and supports active soil biology. Compost and chicken manure are applied in spring to nourish the vines and build long-term soil health.
Every parcel is hand-picked and made on site by Luke, with an emphasis on healthy fruit and minimal intervention. Organic farming is central to the winery approach: regular sulphur sprays protect against powdery mildew, while foliar nutrition supports strong vines and fruit with the balance needed for clean, natural fermentation. The result is small-batch wine shaped by careful farming, close attention in the winery and the individual character of each block.
